Craniomandibular Dysfunction (CMD)
If you notice jaw pain in the morning, you may have spent the past few hours heavily grinding or clenching your teeth. In dentistry, this is known as bruxism.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (Craniomandibular Dysfunction, CMD) is a blanket term for structural, functional, biochemical, and psychological disorders of the muscles or joints of the jaw.
Causes of Bruxism
Stress and emotional strain are often the cause of teeth grinding or clenching. Even children and teens may grind their teeth at night. Consider the consequences: abrasion, loosening of teeth, even prosthetics can be damaged. In addition to morning jaw pain, headaches and even tension in the neck muscles may occur after grinding at night. Medicines can alleviate the pain, but they don’t eliminate the cause.
