Functional orthodontic therapy
Functional orthodontic treatment emphasises muscle strengthening and soft tissue formation in the mouth. The two types of appliances used are known as activators and function regulators.
A bit like taking your mouth to the gym, these removable appliances promote healthy development of the surrounding muscle and other tissues through movement. They also regulate the function of the tongue, lips, and chewing mechanism.
There are no direct forces exerted, which makes the treatment remarkably comfortable and gentle.
The device should be worn at least 14 hours a day, including as much daytime as possible.
Removable Appliances
Activator
The activator is a one-piece appliance. It influences mandibular retrognathism and malocclusion using the muscles of the mouth.
Double Plate Appliance
This appliance influences the position of the lower jaw in relation to the upper jaw. It is adjusted using screws. It should be worn for a minimum of 14 hours.
Bionator for Children and Adults
Simultaneously affects the upper and lower jaws. It corrects bite depth and thus occlusion using the patient’s own muscle power.
Biognathor for Adults
The biognathor is more aesthetic because the lip guard is removable. It is used to correct dental and jaw malalignment as well as grinding.
Fränkel’s Function Regulator
Fränkel’s function regulator affects the growth and position of the jaws. There are four types. Types I and II correct mandibular retrognathism. Type III corrects mandibular prognathism. Type IV corrects open bite.
Goal of Functional Orthodontics
The aim of functional orthodontics is to achieve biological harmony of the jaws in children and adolescents, counteracting undesirable development.
