What causes snoring?

Snoring sounds are created when soft tissues in the region of the pharynx and larynx flutter back and forth like a flag in the wind as you breathe at night. Often this happens when the uvula is too long or the epiglottis too soft. Males are particularly at risk, although snoring is not exclusive to men. Many women are affected as well! Snoring also typically increases with age (general degenerative symptoms of old age, fatty deposits, reduced muscle tone).

Types of Snoring

There are two basic types of snoring:

  • Snoring without apnoea
  • Snoring with apnoea

Therapy Options

Snoring disrupts sleep, and those affected may experience tiredness throughout the day because they simply don’t get a chance to rest and recuperate. We absolutely recommend seeking out a specialist if this is the case. Orthodontics offers effective treatment methods with splints, orthodontic jaw regulation, and also combined with jaw surgery.

Orthodontists and oral surgeons offer the best therapy with jaw regulation and jaw surgery respectively. These specialist dentists can remove the causes of sleep apnoea so that the patient will not be dependent on any appliance after the treatment. However, the patient’s individual anatomy always comes into play. The diagnosis is the deciding factor because the treatments don't have the same effect on all patients.

Ask Dr. Drost. He will gladly advise you.
We look forward to your visit.

Other Ways to Counteract Snoring

  • Losing weight, if you are overweight

  • Elevating your upper body
  • Forgoing sleeping pills
